We spent several days traveling, filming, and photographing the heart of this community in Wewoka, Oklahoma. From local bank leaders to families to members of The Seminole Nation of Oklahoma—including time with the Chief and Assistant Chief—we were welcomed with warmth and generosity.\

A powerful reminder of how storytelling connects history, community, and purpose.

Look Right, I Mean Left

My wife, Lisa, shared this note with her team—and I asked if I could share it with you too. It captures the heart of what this place is giving us:

“Tuesday after work, Scott and I were sitting out by the fire and listening to the owls as we watched the sun set into the trees. I was watching the fire and probably wondering where the dog was, when Scott made a quiet noise. He said, ‘shh, shh, don’t move fast, but look over there to your right, I mean left.’ When I slowly turned my head, we saw a deer walking towards us. She stopped several feet away and just watched us and preened herself and flicked her ears. It was one of the coolest things that I’ve ever seen in my own backyard. Anyways… I was just thinking that if he hadn’t been watchful and if he hadn’t made me quietly aware, the moment would have passed unnoticed. It made me think that’s one of the things we need right now. Not only to be watchful of cool things, but to quietly and with almost reverence, share it with each other. We need the feel goods, the feel of awe and joy of our work. I hope you tell someone to ‘look right, I mean left’ today and I hope that whatever the beautiful thing is, that it makes you both smile.”

That deer has returned more than once. And so has that sense of awe.

Since that evening, we’ve been busy tending to the land—cutting and stacking firewood, planting our first garden, and hiking the property while watching the stream rise and fall with each storm. Some mornings, you can hear the rush of the water from inside the house.

We’ve planted lettuce, jalapeños, tomatoes, basil, thyme, mint, and more. And even if the deer or rabbits end up enjoying it before we do, building this space and watching it grow has brought so much joy.
