A Walk In My WoodsClearing the Past, Planting the Future Spring is arriving, and I’m eager to see our land transform. I’ve been traveling the past two weeks, and while I’ve enjoyed the trip, I find myself missing our woods and itching to get back to the work and vision we have for the property. There’s a short window before the vines, foliage, and poison ivy take over, and I’m ready to dive in. I want to cut and stack firewood from fallen trees, transplant clusters of ferns to line the driveway for a more welcoming arrival, and begin mapping out two new trails for hiking or mountain biking through the overgrown areas. Near the creek, there’s an old child-sized picnic table—it must have been an enjoyable refuge for the family who lived here before us. We think it’s the perfect spot for reading a book, having lunch, or simply soaking in the forest and its wildlife. We’re excited to restore it and make it a peaceful little getaway. Every hike still reveals bits of the past—tires, rusted car parts, and random debris. Clearing those out has become part of our rhythm, helping the land stay as healthy and vibrant as it already is. Ironically, this past weekend brought snow and freezing temps, so I probably wouldn’t have made much progress anyway. But I’m looking forward to returning and continuing to care for this beautiful place we now call home. It’s interesting—what I’ve noticed is that the process of tending to this land mirrors the evolution of my work. Over the years, my business has gone through its own seasons of clearing and planting. Each pivot has required me to let go of what no longer fits and make room for new growth. These past two years have felt like one of those seasons—focused, thoughtful, and full of groundwork. And now, just like the ferns starting to pop up through the soil, I feel that things are beginning to bloom. The roots are strong, the vision is clear, and this next season feels full of possibility.
