There's something fascinating about watching a bobcat prepare to hunt. Recently, one of our trail cameras captured a bobcat crouching low to the ground, carefully positioning itself before making a move. It reminded me of watching a house cat stalking something in the backyard. The same deliberate movements, the same concentration, just on a much larger scale. I believe it caught a squirrel just outside the camera's view. I couldn't see the outcome, but watching that behavior was pretty remarkable. Over the past month, we've been seeing quite a bit of bobcat activity along our creek. We believe there may be two or three different bobcats moving through the property. They travel quickly, often appearing in the camera's frame for only a few seconds before disappearing into the woods. What's particularly interesting is that they all seem to be following the creek, moving either upstream or downstream. And they're certainly not alone. We've also captured what appears to be a family of three fishers, along with raccoons, possibly a family of them, deer, and more recently a fox and a coyote. I'm beginning to realize just how much activity takes place along this one stretch of our property. It's easy to walk through the woods and think everything is quiet. But the cameras are revealing something different. There's a whole community of wildlife moving through these trails, following routes and going about their daily lives. I'm becoming more interested in understanding those patterns. Where are the animals coming from? Where are they going? Do they use the same paths regularly? I'm planning to add two more trail cameras so I can follow more of their movements. I'm curious what we'll discover when we start seeing activity from different locations along the creek. I've also been doing a little work on the trail leading down to the water. Recently, I cut two stumps to use as seats beside the creek. It's a simple addition, but I like the idea of having a place to sit for a while and watch what's happening around me. One of the things I appreciate most about living here is how easily I can step outside and take a short walk through the woods. Sometimes I just need to clear my head, gather my thoughts, or feel a little more centered. Even a few minutes can make a difference. I know I should make time for those walks more often. The leaves are changing, and we're approaching peak fall color on our property. As you're reading this, I'm spending a couple of weeks in the Caribbean working on a photography and video production project. While I'm enjoying the warmer weather, I'm also looking forward to returning home and seeing how much the woods have changed. By then, autumn will be giving way to the quieter days of late fall. There's one other thing I've been thinking about. For over a year, I've wanted to pitch a tent down by the creek and spend a night camping in our woods. I've always thought it would be a wonderful experience, sleeping under the trees and listening to the sounds of the forest. But now that I've seen how much wildlife travels through that exact spot, I'm having second thoughts. Between the bobcats, fishers, raccoons, and the occasional coyote, I'm beginning to wonder just how much company I'd have during the night. I still want to do it. I'm just not quite as enthusiastic as I was before watching those trail camera recordings. So here's a question for you. Knowing what I've seen on those cameras, would you spend a night camping there?
