Critics and Festivals praise REVEALED! Photographer Scott Indermaur creates one-of-a-kind portraits of 11 individuals who have been given the unique challenge of symbolically capturing their essence and spirituality in a small box. Filmed in Providence, RI in 2010 and released in 2011. This is the second trailer for the film. Running time of film is 42 minutes.

Upon examining my relationship with my own spirituality, I wanted to learn how other people connect with their sense of self. My intentions were to photograph spirituality from a non-literal perspective. I wanted to peel back the layers of traditional spirituality and focus on the individual’s personal essence.

I presented my subjects with a small wooden box and asked them in advance of the photography session to bring items that represented their spiritual experience in which to fill the space. The concept of identity and the awareness of a higher existence quickly evolved into a vessel of self-exploration and quiet confession. I soon discovered that my subjects shared far more … the works I am selecting for publication illustrate my subjects’ responses to the project, as well as the inadvertent disclosures of their most subtle hopes and fears.

What I find to be most interesting is the profound effect this project has had on so many of my subjects. Given the opportunity to look within, many experienced a journey that took them much deeper than their initial inner self-examination, which revealed undiscovered truths about themselves. I asked my subjects to reflect upon their responses through essays, which accompany their portraits.

Rhode Island Public Radio’s (RI’s NPR) This I Believe – Rhode Island and REVEALED are two projects that have been easily merged and complement each other to create the project THIS I BELIEVE REVEALED . This collaboration makes an even greater impression and impact on Rhode Islanders through print, radio and photography that create a unique and multi-dimensional experience and personal connection for the audience. Their essays may also be heard online at Rhode Island's NPR. The collaboration features the essays of over 30 Rhode Islanders who share the core values that guide their daily lives and those individuals sharing those core values as REVEALED subjects. The result is a powerful combination of creativity, words and photography. This project is made possible in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts, through an appropriation by the Rhode Island General Assembly and a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts.

I am amazed at the meaningful insights and energy children add to the REVEALED project. I was inspired to bring this project to 4th, 5th and 9th grade classes, and found new layers of excitement to my work on REVEALED that only children can generate. Inspired by their energy, I have also extended this project to groups of adults. Instead of a wooden box, they are given a paper box to decorate to represent what they believe in and their essence. The joy I find is after the project, they now have a piece of art they created to take home and remind themselves of their experience.
