The Many Hats of a Multi-Media Producer: Why It Matters for Corporate Photography and Video
Scott Indermaur on location monitoring audio and video—wearing the many hats of a Multi-Media Producer.
About ten years ago, I found myself struggling to answer a simple question: What do you do?
Was I a photographer? Yes.
But I was also producing video.
And often I was acting as a producer—or even a location scout.
At first, I tried fitting myself into just one of those boxes, but it never felt right. Eventually, I landed on a title that covered it all: Multi-Media Producer. A role that blends photography and video production to create cohesive storytelling.
It’s not a term you hear every day, but it reflects the way I work—wearing many hats so that my clients get the most out of every project. For corporate and commercial clients, that versatility is what helps bring stories to life, whether it’s through headshots, CEO messaging videos, workplace candids, or factory and lab productions.
Here’s what that looks like in practice:
Photographer
With more than 30 years behind the camera, photography will always be my foundation. I started my career as a photojournalist, telling authentic stories for newspapers. That training sharpened my ability to capture real moments, whether it’s an executive portrait, a biotech technician in a cleanroom, or associates collaborating in a boardroom.
Over the years, I’ve traveled across the United States (only three states left on my list!) and to more than a dozen countries for photography projects. From factory floors to financial institutions, from community banks to corporate labs, I’ve seen firsthand how the right visuals help organizations tell their story with clarity and impact.
Videographer
More than a decade ago, I recognized that many clients needed both photography and video—but often had to hire separate teams. As a photographer, I sometimes felt sidelined on video sets, as though the stills were secondary to the moving images.
That’s when I decided to expand my own expertise. Today, I not only create video content myself, but I also collaborate with talented directors of photography and video professionals. By offering both photography and video under one roof, I ensure a seamless process, consistent messaging, and cohesive visuals that align perfectly with a company’s brand.
Producer
Producing is often the invisible hat—but it’s one of the most important. From initial meetings and research to logistics and execution, I’ve worked as both lead producer and co-producer.
Sometimes it makes sense for me to bring in a dedicated producer with specific local knowledge or industry connections. Other times, I handle it directly, ensuring that all the moving pieces—from scheduling interviews to securing locations—come together smoothly.
This flexibility allows me to adapt to the scope of each project, whether it’s a single-day shoot at a corporate headquarters in Boston or a multi-day production in another state.
Scout
Scouting is all about finding the right backdrop for the story. Sometimes I bring in professional scouts with extensive location libraries, especially for out-of-state productions. Other times, I do the legwork myself—especially here in Rhode Island and New England, where I know the terrain well.
Whether it’s tracking down the perfect bridge for a lifestyle shoot or evaluating factory spaces for a corporate video, scouting ensures that the story is told in the right environment.
Why Wearing Many Hats Helps My Clients
For corporate and commercial clients, the benefit of working with a Multi-Media Producer is simple: efficiency, consistency, and experience.
Instead of juggling multiple vendors, you get one point of contact who understands the bigger picture.
Instead of disjointed visuals, you get cohesive photography and video that work together.
Instead of production headaches, you get someone who has been in the trenche, as a photographer, videographer, producer, and scout. and knows how to keep the process moving smoothly.
At the end of the day, it’s not just about delivering great images or compelling videos. It’s about telling a heartfelt, authentic corporate story that elevates your brand and connects with your audience.
Final Thought
The title “Multi-Media Producer” may not be common, but it’s the best way to describe the work I do. It’s about wearing many hats so that my clients don’t have to. Whether you’re a biotech company in Boston, a financial institution, or a small business here in Rhode Island, I bring the skills, experience, and storytelling approach needed to bring your message to life.
